CHAPTER SIX

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, eighth floor

March 25, 1911

4:33 p.m.

A strong arm caught me around my waist. I turned and found myself gazing into Michael’s soot-smudged face.

“I didn’t mean to knock into you,” he said, releasing me.

I immediately missed the pressure of his arm. “I know.”

Michael’s gaze flickered over my shoulder, taking in the terrifying fire. “We need to get out of here.”

“I know that too,” I said. For the first time since the fire began, I felt a moment of hope. I squeezed Michael’s hand, and he smiled at me. If we had been anywhere else, I might have kissed him.

Behind us, I sensed a sudden release. We looked to see the crowds moving through the now-open Washington Place doors. The foreman must have made his way to the lock.

“Let’s go!” Michael said. He clutched my hand, and we started to run toward the doors.

But at that moment, we heard a terrible, familiar scream. Michael drew up short, and I collided with him. I was close enough to hear him whisper a name under his breath: “Marcella.”

I followed his gaze, freezing in horror when I realized what I was seeing through the smoke. Marcella, the girl who loved to torment me, was stranded in a sea of fire. She was still at her workstation, frozen in place as the flames crept closer.

“Help me!” she shouted.
